Welcome to Cultons Scottish Terriers.

Thank you for stopping by to see my Scotties!
THE SCOTTISH TERRIER!! The Scottie is a Medium Sized breed dog. AKC breed standard is 10 inches in height  by 10 inches in length. The AKC standard for this breed is 19 to 22 pounds. The can be smaller but should not be bigger than 22 pounds. This breed is loyal and loving but prefers to be on their own program not yours. This is not a lap dog type breed, however they are very attentive and you will mostly find them sleeping by your feet. The Scottie can be very aloof at times. Often times you can sit and call them for what seems like FOREVER and they just sit and look at you. They seem to be saying--"" I`m right here,, what do you want?. Do I really have to go over there-? Can`t you just tell me what you want from over there?" This breed is loaded with personality, I have yet to find two Scotties that had the same personality.I have been breeding this breed for over a decade and have had the pleasure to be in the company of many Scotties.. The Scottish Terrier comes in MANY different colors. Black Brindle, Black, Brindle, Wheaten ,Silver Brindle. Red Brindle. Wheaten can come in a variety of colors-- Red, caramel. light buff, Mahogany, and brown. Brindle is the original color of the breed --NOT BLACK! Most people that have not had a Scottish Terrier and see one on the street, THINK  they are looking at a black dog. NO SO> Brindle in this breed can appear black. If you want black, you have to be VERY careful in choosing a pup. Black-brindle and brindle can be passed off to first time-- second time purchasers as black. The purchaser finds out different when puppy is clipped and the brindle coat comes out. For more info on the Scottie and how to choose a breeder and pup, Please go to the How To Screen A Breeder Section of this web site.

ABOUT My Breeding Program::: My main concern in my breeding program is HEALTH. I also breed for correct conformation, This is height, weight, tail , length, ear set, ect..You will not ask for a Scottie here and end up with something that ends up looking like a wire haird Dachshund. To get proper conformation I have AKC Champion sired breeding dogs. My dogs are not show dogs, However they do meet AKC standards and could very well be shown. I DO NOT sell my Scotties to Show home, I prefer pet homes . All puppies are to be placed with a spay/neuter contract. I have a few pictures on here of previous pups. All are from my male and one of my 3 females. This is not a breeding facility or a puppy mill, we have 4 SCOTTIES! Thats ALL!!     All of our Scotties are vWD clear.  I have also run the risk factors for CA. I am running a CA CLEAR breeding program! To find out more info on CA go to the STCA web site. Click on Grand Central. Then go to CA. You can research this disease on that site. Make yourself aware of this. You can run pedigrees of prospective pups through this Risk Calculator, as I have had done.  Before you buy a Scottie please educate yourself on the breed. This breed has Scottie Cramp, Liver problems,CMO, Epilepsy and the two diseases mentioned above. A good breeder will know about ALL of the scottie diseases and will make sure the purchaser is educated before the sale is made. If your seller is only concerned with telling you price, BEWARE! WHen Screening your potential breeder-- make sure they can spell Wheaten. If they spell it wheaton -- move on. They have made no intentions to get to know the breed other than to profit off of it.
Unfortunatley at this time, this site  is under construction. If you would like to talk Scottie, or to inquire on how to obtain a Scottish Terrier, please EMAIL ONLY--PHONE IS BROKEN . Please send to LAINIE  at jasonlainie1@aol.com

HOW TO PROPERLY SCREEN A BREEDER!!

Picture
In this section you will find how to screen a breeder. I decided to add this section when I got to many emails from people not schooled on diseases, conformation or temperament of the breed. Just because you have had a Scottie or two, does not mean you know this breed! You have been familiarized to it but not all Scotties are created equally!  You must screen for health , ect.. YOU must make sure your breeder is educated on the breed and not just breeding for $$$ !! To do this there is a series of questions you should ask your breeder. Here is where I start when I am looking for a puppy.

#1) How long have you been breeding this breed?   I found that when George Bush was President MANY,MANY people jumped on the back of the Scottish Terrier for $$$ and $$ only! The breed became popular with the introduction of Barney and Beasley and MANY unprofessional breeders bought mill dogs and flooded the market with them. ASK if they bred BEFORE the BUSH family got into the White House! It is faulse that breeders who have been breeding for 20 Plus years know the breed very well. SO SCREEN THEM FOR DISEASE GOOD! These breeders get comfortable with thier breeding program and do not test for genetic illnesses. Some do not even study the breed anymore and are not up to date on diseases. A good breeder will always study the breed, NO ONE will ever know everything about the breed. We need to study all of the time!

#2) ALL BREEDERS should EDUCATE YOU, The purchaser, on their lines, History behind the lines, The dogs that bred, and the breed! YOU should be educated on The the diseases related to the breed, proper health care, ect..  I don`t care if you`ve had 100 puppies! I will educate you on pup care, breed info, my scotties lines, ect>>.. I find a breeder that is unwilling to educate you, he/she only interested in $$.  BEWARE of these breeders!

#3) Ask about DISEASES> ALL BREEDERS have some disease in their history. If you call a breeder, ask what diseases they have had, and they say NONE-- MOVE ON!  Either they have not been breeding long enough to have a disease or they are not being truthful. There are some basic diseases that ALL purchasers should be educated on.  These are -- vWD, Scottie Cramp., CMO, LIver Shunts, Bladder ,Liver AND Kidney Cancers, Cushings, Lymphoma, ect.. There is only one that can be tested for-- vWD. You can ask your breeder to please send you a copy of their CLEAR vWD certificate. I`ll try to print mine here so you can see it. If I can not you are welcome to email me , I can send it to you so you know what to look for. ASK your breeder oif they are familiar with CA (Cerebellar Abiotrophy).  This is a BIG one right now in the breed. Make sure either you screen the breeding or the breeder did BEFORE the breeding took place.
When asking your breeder about vWD, make sure they tested their dogs BEFORE breeding. If a Breeder tells you they vWD test their puppies through the vet-- MOVE ON!
YOU DO NOT TEST PUPS FOR vWD. That is TO LATE! Afflicted dogs can bleed to death! Why breed for afflicted dog, this makes no sense! This test cost is $180 per dog. Most pet breeders will not test for it, so screen good!

#4) ASK your breder where they raise their pups. You will find home raised pups to have the best temperament. This is because they are with the breeder 24 hours of the day. Puppies should be socialized and played with. They should be kept clean and fed properly. They should not be to fat or to thin. Puppies  should not be agressive or timid.Kennel raised dogs are not with humans all day. They see them on occasion. Most do not have toys , so they play with each other. This brings in dominance and submissive issues! When raised in the home the breeder can correct these problems when they arrise.  Breeders should NOT give shots before 8 weeks of age. If given sooner the shot will fight the natural immunity mom has given pup. Thus pup becomes wide open for disease. Shots should be given 8,12,16 and 20 weeks of age. Some breeders will do only a 2 way shot at 9 weeks and then 12 weeks. They Tieter their dogs to see if the immunity is in the pup. If the nautral immunity is already there, a 5 to 7 way shot is completely unneeded. If this is the case get the Tieter paperwork for your vet..If a breeder tells you they give shots at 5,6, weeks of age--MOVE ON or ask them to hold off. If they refuse--MOVE ON!  This is your new baby, make sure it is cared for properly BEFORE you bring it home. We do this with our children, we should do it with the pets we bring into our homes.  I give shots at 8,12, and 16 weks. IN summer would like pups to be given at 20 weeks if you are in So Cal. We have HIGH parvo due to the constant year round heat! Your puppy should be wormed before you take it. You should also recieve a Vet Health Check paper or the Fax # to have your vet sent it to your vet. ALL PUPS SHOULD HAVE PAPERWORK ON HEALTH WHEN PLACED!!

#5) AKC is the ONLY acceptable registry. Any other registery is a puppy mill registry PLAIN AND SIMPLE! This is a FACT not a myth! DO NOT let a breeder tell you differently. If you do they are LYING to you. If they will lie about paperwork, what else will they lie to you about? Taking a puppy out of a mill is not saving a life. It is actually making room for a new puppy to fill that place. These are nasty places , they keep dogs in cages, ect.. I will post a picture of a puppy mill on this web site.. PLEASE BUYER BEWARE of these places. Remember CKC, APRI, APR all Puppy MIll registries. Even if the breeder obtained two pups reg as CKC and is not a puppy mill. They still breed puppy mill stock, thus they promote disease and bad conformation/temperament. Please be aware that wehn you buiy that cute puppy in the pet store-- IT DID COME FOR A MILL! This is also a fact. I do not care what the Pet Store has told you. They are telling fairy tales. NO responsibe or caring breeder will put thier pups in a pet store. All responsible breeders want to meet the purchaser, screen the purchaser, and if they are like m e they want to stayin contact with the pup for its lifetime. This is to keep up on temperament and health of the breeding dogs lines. Pet stores do not keep these records for breeders and do not screen potential buyers! doesn`t this say something!  PET STORES PROMOTE PUPPY MILLS THIS IS A FACT!

#6) Your breeder should educate you on foods. Corn, wheat and Soy are no good for Dogs. Dogs are Celiac! They Should be given Salmon, Lamb or Rabbit. Some can do fine with Chicken , but some can not. I suggest NO grocery store brand food. I use only the best organic food for my dogs. I get it at http://www.scottieschoice.com > I make a stew and then add small portions of this kibble to the stew. This goes back to the way dogs were fed BEFOER the great depression when dog food was created ! Before the great wars, we made our dogs food one time per week. IT was left on the counter and re-boiled ever few days. This let the nautral bacteria into the food, plus there was not corn, wheat, soy, ect to promote disease. Durring the Wars and great depression we were issued stamps to feed our families. THis meant no food for the dogs. KELLOGS the cereal company decided to make a cheap dog food to get through the wars and depression. This was a CORN based food with undigestables in it( guts, bones, beaks, feathers, ect,) . Going this route over the last 70 to 90 years has done great damage to ALL breeds of dogs. Life span is lower and diseases are higher.. I will suggest to you to make your own food out of Lamb, Brown Rice.Orange, yellow and leafy veggies and some fruit. Blueberries, cranberries, apples. Then add the organic kibble to this. So far SO Good. I have not had to take my personal Scottie to the vet for health concerns for YEARS!  We actually fed our Blue Tick Coon hound like this as well. He lived to be 14 YEARS OLD! This was a 90 pound dog. I am sold on this food program! I have seen it work!I also feed a multivitamin. It is all natural and organic. I get it at http://www.nuvet.com the order code for that vitamn is 742909.. Vets will say -- You do not need a multivitamin, the dogs get what they need form the food. I have to ask-- DO you take a multivitamin? Why do you take it, you eat right?  You eat better than your dog, Right? Well if you do not get all you need from food , How would the dog get all they need from Bagged or canned DOG FOOD? It`s a common sense issue here!
Please be aware that IMAS and EUKANUBA were just both recalled in July and August of 2010!

#7) This is the easiest Screening infoI can give you.. If a breeder calls their dogs, Tawny, Blonde,
Buff, or WheatOn, MOVE ON! This ia  CASH breder only. They breed the breed and are not familiar with the most basic of info!BAD NEWS THERE, MOVE ON! All breders hould know what they are doing before it happens.

#8)Scotties are GREAT with kids ONLY if they are started off with kids. If kennel raised and not socialized I wouldn`t trust one with my kids. Make sure if you have kids , you MEET THE BREEDER< You see how pups are kept and you take your kids to see how the dogs interact.. Meet the Dog parents! Make sure they are VERY social in temperamant..Temeramant is heriditary.

#9) You should ALWAYS get a Sales Contract and Health Guarantee. The State of California has a 10 day warranty period for contagious diseases. PARVO<DISTEMPER< ECT.. 10 FULL DAYS. Get it in writing and make sure your breeder knows this. Ask them if they give 10 days BEFORE buying. ALL breeders should know the laws in their state. You shold also get at least a one year health gaurantee. There are TO MANY diseases in this breed that DO NOT show until 6 months to one year. Make sure you are covered incase your new puppy comes down with CMO, CA < Epilepsy or something else. When A breeder does not stand behind the breeding and does not issue a health guarantee , I have to wonder why? Do they know of bad health and are not syaing anything?

#10) I find this to be the biggest-- ALL BREEDERS SHOULD GIVE BACK TO RESCUE!! If you create it you take responsibility for it. I will take back any of my pups that I have placed if they do not work out. So far in 13 years I have taken back 1 puppy!  I do rescue, NOT WITH STCA`s SCOTTIE RESCUE.. I do it on my own. I will go to mills and rescue dogs and then plce them. They DO NOT deserve this way of life. I will take in an unwanted Scot and find it a home. I will home a sick dog until it is better, then find it a home. Breeders that love the breed will do this. These breeders are my kind of people. If you luve the breed-- it is not just what you have bred it is the ENTIRE BREED!  When I have no rescue dogs to place I donate $100 from each puppy sale to our local shelter. I do this with FOOD,BLANKETS, TOYS,bowls and SHOTS!

These are the things I ask when I am thinking of getting a Scottie. This is a new member of your family and he/she should have the best start in life. This will promote a long lifetime.

This is the vWD Certificate for my male Spirited King Deveron. AKA :: PHillip.

Picture
This is a Proper vWD certificate done by VetGen.com . ALL breeders should have their dogs tested for vWD. If the breeder does not know about vWD,  MOVE ON! This test is not done on puppies. Cost is $180. It is done on the breeding dogs. This is posted here for your benefit. You now know what they look like when properly done. This is not a test done on pups After birth. After birth is to late!  Because Phillip has been tested as clear-- NONE of his pups can have this disease. I breed him to vWD CLEAR females ONLY!
At this time there is no test for CA> Phillip is a 5th Generation CA carrier. His puppies are considered CLEAR.. They are 6th Generation!!!!! Our Females are CA CLEAR!

Our Scotties have their own facebook site. Over 200 pictures of my Scotties and offspring. There are comments on that site from purchasers, ect.. That page is listed under Cultons Scottish Terriers . If you would like to inquire on a puppy, or to get more info on our Scotties,  email LAINIE at jasonlainie1@aol.com
.PHONE IS BROKEN SO PLEASE USE EMAIL!
Below is a few pictures of our previous pups now all grown up. Puppy pictures are very cute, but they don`t show conformation. I like to show how my Scotties will look full grown.

I do believe that getting a new pup  is the equevelent of bringing home a new baby. 99.99% of new puppy buyers do not have a new puppy shower! So I like to add a GIANT puppy pack to each pup. Puppy packs vary a bit, but they pretty much have the same things in them.. I like to provide a blanket, leash, collar, puppy shampoo, ear clearner, puppy food, treats, toys, And Vitamins. On occasion I will add more--LIKE A BED, sometimes no ear cleaner. If I can provide Potty Patches I throw those in on occasion for FREE!  It just depends on what is in stock, when I make order.

More pictures of our babies all grown up. You can see by looking at all of them that I have a certain look I am breeding for. I have been able to Maintain this conformation for years now . I like to combine the Show lines with the pet lines. This gives pups a more loving temperament with the proper conformation.  Sorry the pictures are small. I have no idea how to adjust size. MORE picts can be sent via email.

WE POTTY TRAIN OUR SCOTTIE PUPPIES!

Over the past few years I have decided to start puppies on potty training.I felt that if I was reading the newspaper and getting massive amounts of ink on me, what are the puppies getting on them. You can see on a wheaten that the fur turns grey. You have to wash them several times before the print comes out of the coat fully! I looked at this and said to myself-- What are the long term affects of Newsprint? So I decided to use Potty grass. It is cleaner and more nautral to the puppies. They get no ink on them at all! This has to be a plus in the health department!  I start potty training  with a device called Potty Patch. You can google that to see how it works. I buy mine for $40 at WalGreenes Drug Store . You can also google them to find them online and see the video on how they work. I start the puppies on this training at 3 weeks of age. Right when they start to walk. They then use this the whole time they are with me.By the time they leave they are opened up to my entire kitchen and use potty patch. I NEVER PUT MY PUPS OUTSIDE while with me. I suggest you not put them out until ALL SHOTS Series have been given (16 to 20 weeks). They will use potty patch and have no accidents. They will then transition EASILY to the grass because this is what they have been  going on since 3 weeks of age.  I do not place puppies with families from 6 to 9 weeks. I like to keep them from 10 to 12 weeks. This helps puppies learn to socialize with the older dogs and they get over the nautral fear period all dog breeds go through. This happens from 8 to 10 weeks in age.Placing a pup of any breed at 6 weeks of age is WAY to early. They do not get to learn dog behavior from their Pack members, they learn human behaviors... These are NOT HUMANS! Puppies are then started on Crate Training at 8 weeks of age. By time of placement at 10 to 12 weeks they can stay in crate for about 2 hours. NO LONGER!

If you would like more info on Pups and Availability please EMAIL ONLY. NO PHONE CALLS PHONE IS BROKEN!    REFERENCES SENT BY EMAIL!
